The William Jolly and Victoria Bridges share the traffic demand between Milton and South Brisbane. During peak hour, traffic moves at a crawling pace across the two bridges.
The Hale Street bridge (and associated work) will alieviate this pressure and allow for the growing population in the area. At this stage, it has not been confirmed as a toll road.
With the bridge design complete, Brisbane City Council started work on the Hale Street bridge earlier this week, with Lord Mayor Campbell Newman turning the first sod.
The bridge is due for completion in 2010 and includes pedestrian and cycle connections, which will improving transport and recreational options for members of the public.
